How to plant a tree root. Backfill with the native soil and keep your new tree well watered for the first year and get ready to enjoy your tree for decades. Thoroughly soak the root ball in water before planting - standing it in a bucket is good for this. To start planting trees from twigs use a sharp clean pruner or knife to clip off sections of tree branch around 6 to 10 inches 15-25 cm long.

If harvested and stored properly BB trees can also be planted at any time of the year. Holes should be 2 to 3 times wider than the root ball but only as deep as the root ball. Choose a suitable planting site for the needs of your tree Prepare the soil Dig a hole deep enough to contain the roots Put the tree in its hole and spread out the roots Replace most of the soil Water well let the water drain and put back the rest of the soil.

Choose the spot where your new tree will have full sun and well-drained soil then dig a hole three times the diameter of the root ball and about as deep and plant. Dig a shallow broad planting hole. Dig a hole that is wide enough and deep enough to put the plant in without bending or crowding the roots.

This good soaking will help the plant get a better start. Place the tree in the center of the hole on the undisturbed pedestal so the root crown where the trunk meets the roots is about 1-12 to 2 inches above the surrounding ground level. The size of the root ball or nursery pot provides the guideline for planting depth.

Place the plant into the planting area or hole at the correct depth and then backfill the bottom half of the space around the root ball. Remove leaves and buds. Place the root portion of the plant in water and let it soak before you plant - several hours for woody plants.

Do not soak the roots for more than 24 hours nor allow the roots to ever dry out. Digging a broad planting pit breaks up the surrounding soil and provides newly emerging tree roots room to expand. If amendments are not used do not tamp so heavily as to compact the soil.

Dip the cut end in hormone powder available at garden stores. Remove leaves and buds. Place root ball in center of hole.

Tease or prune those roots away. If you can plant the trees right after they arrive carefully untangle and soak the roots in a bucket of water for 12 to 24 hours before planting in order to replace the moisture lost during shipping. Loosen the root ball to encourage roots to grow into the soil.

Plant the tree so that where the roots meet the base of the tree. Keeping the sides of the planting hole angled toward the center further encourages the roots to spread. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball but make it twice as wide.

Tamp the soil lightly with your foot. Keep the soil moist but not soggy until you can plant the trees. Place the removed soil on a tarp or in a wheelbarrow.

Dig a hole three times as wide as the pot and the same depth. If your tree came tied to a nursery stake remove the stake. 10-20 minutes for perennials asparagus strawberries etc.

Placing dirt around the tree trunk above the root ball will cause the tree to grow in a way that will make it likely to fall over prematurely. Bare root trees with up to 2 inches of stem caliper can be planted with excellent survival during the midsummer if preconditioned in a bed of irrigated pea gravel called the Missouri Gravel Bed for 10 to 12 weeks. From the top of the root ball prior to planting if the root flare is not visible.
