In this way even your F1 hybrid leeks will reproduce and become exactly the same as their parents. Leeks are heavy feeders so throughout the growing season side-feed with nitrogen fertilizer.

Buy leek seedlings from garden centres and plant outside in final position - the fourth week of May. Once theyre in the ground the only thing you need to do is to water if dry and weed a couple of times. In terms of result for time theyre very productive.

The best time to plant leeks outside is between May and the end of July. Make sure the holes are vertical and move the dibber about from side to side so that they are slightly larger at the top. This is when I like to thin them out and give them a trim.

Transplant spring sown seedlings to their final position - the first week of June. Begin to harvest winter sown leeks when young - the second week of August. The holes should be about 5 cm 2 in in diameter.

You may cut some of the above-ground leaves of the leek plant to encourage the growth of the bulb. Place a leek in it and push the soil around it covering the roots. Improve native soil by mixing in several inches of aged compost or other rich organic matter.

They grow well in raised beds containers and in-ground gardens. Space leeks 6 inches apart in an area that gets 6 or more hours of sun daily and has nutrient-rich well-drained soil. Plant leeks during the cool weather of early spring and fall.

Sow seed thinly along the trench cover with soil water and label. Baby leek plants develop around the parent plant that are exact clones of their parents. Sow seed in pots or modules of peat-free seed or multi-purpose compost in spring.

Im currently in the process of hardening off the first round of onion and leek seedlings in preparation for permanently planting them outside. During March or April sow leek seeds thinly 1cm ½in deep in rows 15cm 6in apart. Carefully lower one leek plant into each hole twisting each between your fingers to get the roots in.

Leeks can be planted out during June or July when they are about 4 inches 10 cm high and about the thickness of a pencil. Make a long deep trench. Since I want the seedlings to have about 8 weeks of growth before putting them out I count backwards from the Planting Out date below to determine when I need to start them.

For a bumper crop of leeks improve the growing site. Plant leeks in soil that has been amended with compost. After two or three attempts at flowering the leek plant suddenly gives up and sends out new shoots from the base instead.

Transplant the leeks. If you dont have space outdoors or only want a few leeks you can sow in modules indoors then transplant outdoors later. The process of slightly mounding the dirt in this way is called hilling.

Start them off at home in deep pots or troughs and when theyre about pencil thick plant them out on the plot. Harvest leeks from autumn. Sow thinly and thin to the strongest ones to grow on for transplanting.

As the leek grows push more soil around it to keep the stalk covered. Check the roots are in the bottom of the hole and water well so soil is washed in.

Some varieties are hardy and can be harvested right through to spring. Continue adding soil over time keeping the stalk covered to promote blanching. Sow one seed per module.

To plant leeks in holes use a thick dibber or trowel and make the holes 15 cm 6 in deep and 15-23 cm 6-9 in apart depending on what size of leek you want.
